It's the time of year again where families get together and exchange the latest information on tech know how. Here is the first of a number of off topic posts that may follow.
First, anyone reading this is probably better off just going to the PVRblog. I really know little about the subject, but the writer of PVRblog does.
Probably in response to competitve pressures that are known to anyone with a passing interest in the DVR market, Tivo launched ahead of schedule a menu of online services. To take advantage of this, first you'll need a few things.
Here are the basic TivoToGo system requirements and here are the compatible network adaptors for Tivo. Hopefully you don't have to buy anything new.
If your house is like mine, you may need a wireless extender This extends my signal my into my living room from my study, which I think has been shielded against nuclear EMP signals and doubles as a fall out shelter.
But before buying an extender, consider buying this super fast wireless router that just came out. If you are buying a new router, this may be the one to get.
I found the following suggestion on a Tivo forum (which I couldn't find again):
1) Connect a Linksys
USB200M Ver. 1 to Tivo. (you have to buy this directly from the Tivo
store, other adaptors of same model won't work).
2) Connect
a wireless G connector to the Linkysys USB adaptor.
The reason for this type of setup is that Tivo doesn't currently support Wireless G. You can only use wireless B with Tivo, which is slower. (However the company said it will fix that issue in February.) This setup "fools" Tivo into thinking it is connected directly to an Ethernet line and is supposed to drastically increase transfer rates.
Implement at your own risk! I make no guarantees!
Happy holidays!
UPDATE: Congrats to anyone that ignored the above. On Dec 27, 2005, Tivo began selling Wireless G routers, optimized for Tivo Media Center functionality, for $50 smackers. Anyone want to buy a USB adaptor and wireless G connector?
